West Hartford, Connecticut
Eager to find an adaptive reuse for an abandoned, non-performing property, the Town of West Hartford embraced the proposal of Amenta Emma Architects and Ginsburg Development Corporation of Valhalla, New York for a new residential community. The success of Quaker Green has rejuvenated the Elmwood section of West Hartford and reinvigorated the adjacent retail establishments along New Britain Avenue. The community includes a historic restoration of the James Talcott School building to house 24 flat condominiums, and new construction of eleven 2½-story wood-framed buildings comprising 64 townhomes.
Amenta Emma’s overall architectural concept preserves the neighborhood’s residential and commercial character along Quaker Lane and progressively blends the design vocabulary with the residential character west of the community.
