THE TERRACE AT MERCYKNOLL

West Hartford, Connecticut

Mercy Community Health looked to establish a highest and best use of their 58-acre campus in West Hartford and expand their senior living services to the full range of a Continuous Care Retirement Community. Placing a high priority on building character appropriate to the desirable West Hartford community, MCH engaged Amenta Emma to conduct a Master Plan, seek town approvals, and design a new apartment-style independent living building.

The 4 story 187,000 sf building known as Terrace at Mercyknoll houses 92 market-rate independent living apartments for older adults. The lower story of the building is an enclosed concrete parking garage for residents. The three stories atop are wood-framed construction and dedicated to apartments each with a full kitchen and laundry, some with options for a gas fireplace, and a balcony or enclosed sunporch. The building also includes a host of common amenities such as a Signature Room, small bistro with a commercial kitchen, billiards room, exercise room, and small meeting rooms.

Our design demonstrates sensitivity to the scale of the surrounding neighborhoods and takes cues from the housing typologies, creating a contemporary design with classic proportions which fit seamlessly into the neighborhood.
